Learn the fundamentals of relief printing on this week-long summer school.
In this five-day course, you will learn how to prepare, cut, ink and print on both lino and woodblocks. We will explore single-block prints as well as different techniques for working with multiple colours.
Throughout the course we will explore the history of printmaking techniques and learn about how it is used today: from fine art to editorial illustration, advertising and flyers. With a behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Academy's collection of prints, discover artists from around the world who have used woodcut techniques in different ways – from matchbox-sized works to monumental installations.
By the end of the course, you will have a thorough understanding of printing by hand and will have mastered all the materials and skills needed to continue to produce work after the course itself.
Jake Garfield is a London-based artist, working primarily with woodcut printmaking. As Line Of Thought, Jake leads collaborative group projects with institutions including Whitechapel Gallery and Tate, as well as teaching at the Royal Drawing School and Royal Academy. Jake’s work has received a number of awards and lives in collections including The V&A, The Royal Collection, Fitzwilliam Museum, Pallant House Gallery and The British Museum.
