Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism
Explore the rich history of Carnival Arts in this one-day course taught by art historians and curators.
This course will introduce the arts of Carnival, exploring the origins of masquerade, the cultural roots of Carnival, and its development across the globe.
The day will involve looking at Carnival as both a historic and contemporary art form within visual art, alongside the mediums of dance, costume, storytelling, characters and music. You will explore Carnival through the iconic works of artists such as Tam Joseph and John C. M. Lyons. You will then trace the traditions of Carnival through its social context, its evolving meaning, and as a practice of resistance, engaging in all that is inherent to it as a unique cultural phenomenon.
Using our exhibition Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism as a springboard for discussion, you will also delve into the history of the world's biggest carnival in Rio de Janeiro, its artistic narrative and how it shapes carnivals worldwide.
Over the day, you will learn from a range of experts and specialists in Carnival Arts. No prior knowledge is required.
If the course is sold out, please contact public.programmes@royalacademy.org.uk to join our waiting list. Minimum age 18. If you have any access requirements that you’d like to discuss, please contact public.programmes@royalacademy.org.uk.
