Gauguin and the Impressionists

Impressionism left an indelible mark on the history of art with its dynamic brushwork and stray fingerprints. Join us as we unpick the movement’s impact and emergence in 19th century France and consider its influence today.
Looking closely at works on show at the Royal Academy from the Gauguin and the Impressionists exhibition, we will consider the ambitions, techniques and ideas that turned Impressionism from a local experiment into a global phenomenon.
The idea of ‘making an impression’ will be examined from a range of different perspectives, including the experience of sensory data; the imprint of Degas’ finger marks on etching plates, Morisot’s dynamic brushwork, and the fashionable height of Manet’s top hat. We will pay close attention to the material qualities of Impressionist paintings, prints, and pastels and explore the reasons why they were considered both aesthetically and socially radical in the 19th century. We will also discuss differing artistic responses to Impressionism from the end of the century to the present:
• What ideas united Gauguin and Degas?
• Why did Matisse champion Monet’s expressive style and later abandon it?
• In what ways did Impressionism pave the way for abstract painting?
• How do contemporary artists such as Yinka Shonibare RA and Cecily Brown invite us to revisit the forms and subject matter of Impressionist art?
About the course leader: Dr Kathryn Brown is a specialist in modernist art and literature. Her books include Women Readers in French Painting 1870–1890, Matisse: A Critical Life (forthcoming), Perspectives on Degas and Digital Humanities and Art History (forthcoming).
