Making Modernism
Terms and conditions
Join artist Sharon Brindle and learn to paint portraits from life, inspired by the intimate portraits in our 'Making Modernism' exhibition.
Please note: this is an on-site event only
In this course, participants will develop their understanding of form, composition, light and colour in relation to portraiture. With Sharon’s guidance you will work from live models, firstly learning to draw out form, before moving on to explore different mediums, including pastels, gouache and oils.
Inspired by the German artists explored in the RA’s Making Modernism exhibition – Paula Modersohn-Becker, Käthe Kollwitz, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin – all of whom were exceptional draftswomen, there will also be an exclusive opportunity to visit and study their works in the Making Modernism show during the course of the weekend.
Sharon Brindle trained at Camberwell School of Art. The practice and study of drawing is central to her work, with people as a subject – be it the depiction of the human figure as an idea or the individual characterisation of a person inherent in portraiture. Sharon is a member of the faculty at the Royal Drawing School where her teaching emphasises the importance of observation. She has exhibited paintings at the BP Portrait award on three occasions, exhibited in the UK, Italy and Channel Islands, with solo shows in London and Jersey.
