Translate botanical drawings to embroidered floral designs with textile artist Lora Avedian.
Please note: this is an on-site event only
The RA has a long history of botanical drawing and floral painting. Founding member of the Royal Academy, Mary Moser was greatly celebrated for her flower paintings. The RA’s Collection boasts a variety of botanical drawings and paintings of flowers, all of which will provide rich source material for this weekend workshop on floral design.
Textile and embroidery artist Lora Avedian will lead participants from floral drawing to realising those drawings. Participants will be using scrap and vintage materials, along with embroidery threads and ribbons from Lora’s own studio. They will learn how to create pleated fabrics for three dimensional petals in combination with hand embroidery techniques, bringing floral designs to life. Students will apply these embellishment techniques to fabric to create a versatile textile artwork which can be applied to clothing, soft furnishings or simply left as a wall hanging.
Lora Avedian is a London-based multidisciplinary artist, who graduated with a Masters in Mixed Media Textiles from the Royal College of Art in 2017. Lora uses traditional embroidery and embellishment techniques to make modern artefacts, which look as beautiful on the body as they do on a wall. Her work is grounded in history, inspired by ethnographic research and nature, and often uses scrap and vintage materials. Lora makes couture textiles for interiors and fashion, through collaborations with companies such as The New Craftsmen, Barbican Centre and Smythson.
You can see examples of Lora's works, as well as her book, on her website loraavedian.com.
