Experience the influence of Vincent van Gogh and learn to create expressive landscapes.
This five-day summer school will unpack the visual characteristics of van Gogh’s famous works and teach you how to create landscapes infused with movement, energy and physicality.
Drawing inspiration from our exhibition Kiefer/Van Gogh the course will explore the enduring influence of van Gogh on artists from Paul Gauguin, with whom he had a famously tumultuous creative relationship, to Yayoi Kusama and Anslem Kiefer Hon RA. You will discover how van Gogh’s practice can inform your own artistic development, taking his seminal works as a starting point and experimenting with expressive approaches to landscape painting. Led by artist Mark Cazalet, you will work both en plein air and from reference sketches and images. You will explore a variety of mediums including pastel, watercolour, oil paint, monoprint and collage.
Mark Cazalet is an artist and educator based in London and Suffolk. He trained at Chelsea School of Art and Falmouth School of Art before winning scholarships to continue his studies at L'école des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later at The Maharaja Sayajirao University Baroda in Gujarat, India. Since his return to the UK, Mark has held several residencies in the UK and abroad. Mark’s studio practice is centred around drawing, painting and printmaking, usually concerned with landscape themes, informed by qualities of light, colour and presence. Mark is a Senior Member of Faculty at The Royal Drawing School and teaches at West Dean College, The Edward James Foundation, Sussex. He is a Trustee of City and Guilds of London Art School.
