Family day: look, hear, touch
Workshops for families
Sunday 8 October 2023 11am - 4pm
Clore Learning Centre | John Madejski Fine Rooms | Collection Gallery
Drop-in, no booking required
Join us for a full day of creative activities across the Royal Academy.
All activities on our family day are free and drop-in (no booking required)
As part of our Family Day, use your senses to explore and experience the architecture of the RA with artists Lucy Eccles and Gabriele Brambilla. Inspired by our Herzog & de Meuron exhibition, there will be plenty of opportunities to work collaboratively, draw, collage, play with textures and make models. Alongside these activities, join Jake Garfield for a walking drawing tour of our Collection Gallery.
John Madejski Fine Rooms | 11am-1pm & 2-4pm
Come together to create a design installation. After spotting architectural features and details around the rooms, you will use cardboard viewfinders to trace designs and add your own details before adding them to our collective structure. Over the course of the day, our installation will be added to, adapted, and expanded, creating an immersive structure made up of fragments of the space.
While in the Fine Rooms, collect a worksheet with prompts and create a cardboard ‘listening device’ to explore the rest of the RA independently using your ears! Spend as little or as much time as you would like to move to different spaces. Stop, listen, and make a note of what you can hear (in writing or pictures). You might be surprised at what you discover!
Clore Learning Centre | 11am-1pm & 2-4pm
Get hands-on in our learning space with different model-making materials. As you walk around the RA, you might notice brick, concrete, wood, or plaster. Using the different surfaces of these materials, you will create your own textured brick. Taking inspiration from Herzog & de Meuron’s brick exterior of the Tate Modern, we will then assemble all the bricks into a collaborative structure.
Drawing tour | Meet in the Collections Gallery | 10:15am & 1:15pm
Walk, talk, and draw as a family whilst uncovering new corners of the RA and the art inside it.
As part of our Family Day, Look Hear Touch, join a walking tour facilitated by artist-educator Jake Garfield. Across 45-minute sessions, children and families will be invited to walk, look, and draw together while discovering new corners of the RA’s architecture and the art inside it.
No booking required but spaces are limited. We would advise that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour for the best chance of securing a space for your family.
