Discover the characteristics of modernist portraiture in this online drawing class.

Drawing from a model, artist Shannon Bono will lead you in a series of exercises to develop your ability to draw characterful portraits using lines, form, tone, and expressive details. You will examine works by artists such as Lasar Segall, Djanira da Motta e Silva, and Anitta Malfatti, featured in our exhibition, Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism, and practise imbuing your portraits with personality, using real and imagined details.

Our Saturday Sketch Clubs are a series of online monthly art classes led by artists. Whether you're a beginner or a practising artist, these live-streamed classes are designed for everyone. Sessions take place online via a live webinar.

Shannon Bono is an artist and educator with a background in art and science. Shannon’s practice uses anatomy as a second canvas, she views the body as a powerful signifier that provokes dialogue, playing with pose, gesture and the gaze to challenge reality. Shannon holds an MA in Art & Science from Central Saint Martins University and an Associate Fellowship in higher education from the University of the Arts London. She is a recipient of the Sir Frank Bowling Scholarship and is currently completing a Masters in Painting at the Royal College of Art.

For this class, all you will need is a pencil, paper and an eraser.
