Join artist Robin-Lee Hall to learn how to paint with the ancient and luminous medium of egg tempera.
Please note: this is an in-person event only
Egg tempera is comprised of egg yolk, water, and ground pigment, which is then built up over fast drying layers, making the colour of paintings distinctly luminous. The ancient medium dates to the first century C.E. and was the primary painting medium of artists such as Giotto, Botticelli and Raphael until around 1500. During this weekend art-making course, artist Robin-Lee Hall teaches participants how to make egg tempera paint from scratch, build up layers and make marks in different ways with a selection of mark making tools, as well as brushes.
Throughout the weekend, participants learn about traditional and contemporary approaches to the unique medium, as well as explore the properties of egg tempera by looking at examples of artists’ work from the past and present. Building upon the new skills and knowledge from the course, participants create a final work in egg tempera from either direct observation or source material.
Robin- Lee Hall is an award-winning portrait painter and past President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. She has exhibited in and around London including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery.
