The cast reproduces the impost or projecting moulding from which the arch spring. It is from the interior passageway in the Arch of Septimius Severus. The Arch, dedicated in AD 203 in the Roman Forum, is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill. This triumphal arch has always been highly visible and was a source of inspiration for artists. This particular detail in this impost is unusual in that the repeating decoration of the cavetto or concae moulding, has a figural element, a bearded head.
This cast and about eight others casts from the Arch of Septimius Severus were acquired by the Royal Academy from Thomas Lawrence whose collection was sold on 10 May 1830.
