The cast reproduces a small section of the archivolt of the central passageway of the Arch of Septimius Severus (AD 203). The Arch has always been a highly-visible element of the Forum and a source of inspiration for artists.
This cast was acquired by the Royal Academy from Thomas Lawrence whose collection was sold on 10 May 1830.
