In this free exhibition in the Weston Studio, RA Schools students Lolly Adams, Djofray Makumbu and James Sibley explore staging through methods of set building, costuming and moving image production.
An Alarm Clock Rings... draws upon ordinarily non-visible elements within each of the three artists’ practices, unveiling personal narratives and alter-egos. A space for play, miniature figurines are endlessly reconfigured, animation cells are laboured over, costumes are embellished and hiding places can be occupied and explored. Presented here are fragments of the narrative vehicles in which each artist escapes across the causeway, towards finished work.
A proximity to ‘staging’ denotes a backstage area: the work, largely presented on exposed wooden plinths, finds its foundations in the realm of the theatrical. Duration, scale, character and (re)production - as conventional tools within narrative play and screen-writing - are reprogrammed to operate in favour of revelation over concealment. Here the seams are split and continue to widen, offering an escape through the back door.
Featuring an exhibition text by Sally O’Reilly, live performances by Miss HerNia and Djofray Makumbu and work by Lolly Adams, Djofray Makumbu and James Sibley.
