James Sibley (b. 1999)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

James Sibley (b.1999, Crawley) lives and works in London. Present as replicas, knock-offs, stage-sets and object-collections, his works draw upon styles of making which intermittently haunt our industrialised past. In exploring history’s actualisation through the retelling of stories, moments of resistance catch his eyes and ears: glimpses of the alternative economies present in early Sci-Fi, American hippie, the fairground and the Hollywood blockbuster are all heisted to recalibrate an uneasy relationship with contemporary visual culture today. As any good consumer knows, culture itself is material to be assimilated and weaponised.

He is currently studying at the RA Schools, and previously studied at Goldsmiths University of London.

Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Speak To Me I’m On Fire’ (2023) at Scatologicalritesofallnations and ‘Kicking A Dead Horse’ (2021) at Artist Hive Studios. Group Exhibitions include ‘An Alarm Clock Rings…’ (2024), ’Three Years’ (2024) and ‘Premiums II’ (2024) at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.
