Architectural Futures
Architecture Awards Week
Monday 13 May 2019 6 - 8.45pm
The Benjamin West Lecture Theatre, Burlington Gardens, Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly
£10, £6
From Ireland and Mexico to Niger and Thailand, watch the finalists of the Royal Academy Dorfman Award present their work to our jury, and be the first to hear about the winner.
In this special event, the finalists of the Royal Academy Dorfman Award will show their work to our judges, including architect Alan Stanton RA (chair), artist Phyllida Barlow RA, writer and academic Ricky Burdett, Royal Academy Architecture Prize winners Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, architect Louisa Hutton RA, educator and author Lesley Lokko, and Alireza Taghaboni, the winner of last year's Royal Academy Dorfman Award.
The award celebrates emerging practices who are re-imagining the possible futures of architecture and highlights work that is characterised by a high degree of sensitivity to local and global context. The finalists encapsulate the variety of architecture being produced across the world, yet highlight how shared ideas connect practices working in very different conditions.
The finalists are:
Fernanda Canales (Mexico)
Alice Casey and Cian Deegan, TAKA Architects (Ireland)
Mariam Kamara, Atelier Masomi (Niger)
Boonserm Premthada, Bangkok Project Studio (Thailand)
The live judging will be followed by a panel discussion that brings together strands apparent in all the finalists’ work. We will take a look at the value of craftsmanship in contemporary practice, different forms of community engagement, and the benefits of alternative modes of practice. Join us for a discussion that brings together academics, architects and cultural commentators while examining architecture in a global context.
The evening will conclude with the announcement of the winner of the Royal Academy Dorfman Award and the presentation of the £10,000 prize.
