RA Lates presents ‘A Hockney Happening’: a night-long celebration of all things David Hockney from the early 1960s to the present day.
Think LA swimming pools, colourful Yorkshire landscapes, Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell portraits, photo collages and Walt Whitman poetry as we lead you through Hockney’s world.
Experience the RA transformed by a unique line up of artists, performers and DJs who will take-over three floors of the RA and recreate different Hockney eras, plus film screenings, activities, talks, street food stalls, cocktails and more.
Dress code
David Hockney, with prizes on the night for the most convincing Hockney. See our Pinterest board for inspiration.
We ask that guests arrive before 9pm to guarantee receipt of the complimentary cocktail. Please note the Ground Floor areas will close at 11.45pm, the Fine Rooms and Hockney Portraits exhibition will close at 10.30pm.

1960s
Paper Pool workshop
After his first visit to Los Angeles in 1964, Hockney became fascinated with light reflections on Californian swimming pools. Artist Rachael Dickens leads a drop in workshop where you’ll be taught pool painting techniques using watercolours, paint and tissue paper.
Life drawing based on Hockney’s Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy
After visiting Beirut in 1966, Hockney created a series of etchings celebrating gay love based on Cavafy’s poetry. Art Macabre host this drawing salon, complete with live poetry performances.
‘A Bigger Splash’ LA party
A troupe DJs and dancers will bring some LA poolside fun to Burlington House.
