Dutch practice NL Architects joins our programme to discuss its work, including an award-winning renovation of a post-war housing block.
NL Architects was founded in 1997 by Pieter Bannenberg, Walter van Dijk, Kamiel Klaasse and Mark Linnemann, who met while studying at Delft University of Technology. Based in Amsterdam, NL Architects is concerned with how we interact with architecture and the city. Through exploring the performative, social and active aspects of architecture, the practice’s built projects often combine usable objects with architecture such as climbing wall facades and roofs with basketball pitches.
After garnering an international reputation for its project WOS8 in 1998, the practice went on to win a number of international awards and commissions including both the Netherlands International Institute Award and the Mies van der Rohe Emerging Architect Award for its Basketbar at Utrecht University, which combined a coffee shop and a sports facility.
Earlier this year NL Architects received the Mies van der Rohe Prize for its renovation of a 1960s housing block on the outskirts of Amsterdam, which it completed in association with XVW Architectuur. The project, named deFlat, saw the architects refurbish communal areas and the general structure of the 400m-long concrete block, while leaving its residents to oversee the fit-out of the apartments.

Profile
NL Architects
NL Architects is an Amsterdam-based practice that was founded in 1997 by Pieter Bannenberg, Walter van Dijk and Kamiel Klaasse. The partners have worked together since the early 1990s, when they were studying at the Delft University of Technology.
The practice is committed to sustainable development and looks to it as one of the solutions for problems prevalent in contemporary urbanism. Their work is strongly rooted in Dutch architectural tradition and has a conceptual approach, which strives to redefine programmes and typologies.
NL Architects has developed an impressive portfolio that includes a wide range of housing, commercial offices, leisure and sports facilities and interior design, many of which have received international awards. Amongst them are the Mies van der Rohe Award (2017, with XVW architectuur), the European Prize for Urban Public Space (2006), Mies van der Rohe Award’s Emerging Architect Prize (2005), N.A.I. Award (2004), Rietveld Prize (2003), and the Rotterdam Design Prize (2001).
