Join artist Emyr Williams online for an exploration into colour from the comfort of your own home.
Throughout the history of art, colour has played a hugely significant role in art-making. For centuries, artists have explored an ever-expanding range of pigments and mediums. The seemingly endless range of colour choices can make colour seem daunting. Through a series of exercises and challenges over five weeks, participants in this workshop explore and develop a creative and personal working relationship with colour.
Each week, participants explore a different method of working expressively with colour. Participants experiment with various materials and modes of colour through visual responses to different genres of art, such as interior space, still-life, and abstraction. Historical contexts will be examined throughout the course, and each week a simple take-away challenge or learning activity will be set to support and expand the following week’s activities. Every session includes an interactive feedback session with Emyr using online art sharing platform Padlet, as well as smaller group critiques. Materials are not provided, but participants will receive a recommended materials list with a range of materials in mind.
Week 1: Introduction to colour theory: mixing and making exercises.
Week 2: Application of theory into practice, looking at interior space: depth versus space
Week 3: Advanced colour theory, working from still-life: colour clothes form
Week 4: Exploring colour in the abstract: colour as a force
Week 5: New directions, recaps, and personal challenges
By learning about the histories and theoretical basis of colour in art and by putting this knowledge to the test, participants build upon, and enhance, their previous relationship to colour in more personal and dynamic ways.
