Festival of Ideas
Sunday 16 September 2018 4.30 - 5.30pm
The Benjamin West Lecture Theatre, Burlington Gardens, Royal Academy of Arts
£16, £10 concessions
The Festival of Ideas concludes with an event where the audience can put five leading artists on the spot with questions about art, culture and creativity.
Chaired by the Royal Academy’s Artistic Director Tim Marlow, expect conversation to range from the political to the personal as they field questions about their own artistic practice as well as issues raised over the course of the festival, including the challenges facing contemporary artists, diversity and access to the arts.
The panel includes artists Sonia Boyce RA, Michael Craig-Martin RA, Farshid Moussavi RA and Sean Steadman:
Sonia Boyce MBE RA
Boyce's recent work brings performers and audiences into sharper focus by including them within an improvisational part of the artwork, demonstrating how cultural differences might be articulated, mediated and enjoyed. In 2007, Boyce was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the arts. She is currently Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London.
Sir Michael Craig-Martin RA
Craig-Martin studied Fine Art at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture and lives in London. He has exhibited regularly both in the UK and abroad and is widely recognised as an influential teacher, known particularly for his time spent teaching at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Farshid Moussavi RA
Moussavi RA is principal of Farshid Moussavi Architecture and Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She was co-founder of the London-based Foreign Office Architects and her most notable projects include the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, residential complexes in Nanterre and Montpellier, the Victoria Beckham flagship store in London and the Yokohama International Port Terminal in Japan. In 2017, she was made Professor of Architecture at the RA Schools. Moussavi received an OBE in this years Birthday Honours.
Sean Steadman
As a painter, Steadman (who was born in Chelmsford in 1989) is interested in how the world is represented. He makes large paintings which are not abstractions from a subject or an impression of something observed. Instead, his work begins as an intuitive and free associative process, from which a subject or mood emerges. He develops his work, often in a frantic or destructive way, until finally he achieves what he calls "the right configuration" Alongside painting Sean is a prolific maker of drawings and works on paper. He has exhibited in the UK and internationally, curated a number of exhibitions and is represented by Project Native Informant in London.
Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances Michael Landy will no longer be taking part in the event.
