Senior Curator Helen Valentine discusses Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's portrait of his daughter Anna.
Born in Holland in 1836, Lawrence Alma-Tadema studied in Antwerp under the artist-archaeologist Louis De Taye and painter Baron Henri Leys. He moved to England in 1870. 'Miss Anna Alma-Tadema' depicts his youngest daughter Anna, aged 15, in the family home of Townshend House. Anna later became a talented watercolour artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy.
