Gustave Doré, The Triumph of Christianity

The Triumph of Christianity , 1868

Gustave Doré (1832 - 1883)

RA Collection: Art

A drawing relating to Doré's composition The Triumph Of Christianity Over Paganism. There is an oil version of the scene in the Joey and Tobey Tanenbaum Collection, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario. Doré painted the oil as a commission for the opening of an exhibition of his work in London in 1868 and this included an agreement that he would make a watercolour version of the picture to be engraved. It seems likely that this detailed monochrome version is related to this.

Engravings of the scene were published in London by Herbert Bourne in 1872 and by the Doré Gallery in 1899.
