Chris Riddell (b. 1962)
RA Collection: Art
A sketchbook of drawings by the political cartoonist and children's book author and illustrator, Chris Riddell.
Riddell describes the drawings as 'doodles' and stated that he draws constantly, usually having several sketchbooks on the go at the same time. This sketchbook was begun in January 2011, as inscribed on the first page, and was finished later the same year.
The drawings in the sketchbook do not relate to any particular works Riddell has published, but similarities can be found in the themes, such as aliens (relating to his book Alienography: Or, How to Spot an Alien Invasion and What to Do About It), caricatures (relating to his political satires), and other fairy-tale creatures.
Riddell used a mixture of a Japanese brush pen and a Pilot pen to produce the drawings. Unlike some of his other sketchbooks, this one does not include any watercolour.
