Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema RA, Portrait of Sir Ernest A Waterlow, R.A

Portrait of Sir Ernest A Waterlow, R.A, 1889

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema RA (1836 - 1912)

RA Collection: Art

Ernest Waterlow RA was a close friend of Alma-Tadema and this painting was possibly part of an exchange of works between the two artists. When it was exhibited at the Academy in 1890 a reviewer found it ‘a singularly natural and unaffected piece of portraiture’.

Alma-Tadema shows Waterlow with brush and palette in one hand, apparently contemplating a painting that is just out of view. It is quite a private portrait, since there is no engagement with the spectator and the artist seems entirely absorbed in his work.
