According to Armstead's handwritten key, this is a study for his design for the doorway of the Grand Métropole Hotel in Northumberland Avenue, London (now known as the Metropole Building) which opened in 1885. The architects, were Frederick and Horace Francis (1818-1896 and 1821-1894 respectively).
