Henry Hugh Armstead RA (1828 - 1905)
RA Collection: Art
Henry Hugh Armstead was a versatile artist who received training in design and metalworking before studying sculpture. Throughout his career he retained an interest in design and the decorative arts as well as figurative sculpture. In the 1890s, he was among a group of six artists invited to design coins for a new issue of currency. This set of drawings all relate to his entry in this competition. Although Armstead's bid was not successful, one critic commented that he should have won because his designs demonstrated the most 'decorative merit'.
