William Cotton, Landscape with a church

Landscape with a church, early 19th century

William Cotton (fl. 1834 - fl. 1843)

RA Collection: Art

A watercolour landscape with a church-like building on the left and a tall tree on the right.

William Cotton was a Derby porcelain painter and this scene, along with the others on the same mount, is typical of the sort of rural landscape popularly depicted on plates and other porcelain ware in the early to mid-19th century. The drawing was previously in the collection of John Homes Smith or his son, J. H. Smith, both of whom were involved in the porcelain painting industry.
