Richard Redgrave RA, Compositional sketch for 'Going to Service'

Compositional sketch for 'Going to Service', c. 1843

Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)

RA Collection: Art

A compositional sketch in pen and ink and pencil for 'Going to Service', which Redgrave painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843.

This sketch is quite similar to the painting, with two exceptions: the slippers in the bottom left of the painting are replaced by a dog in the sketch, and the table in the bottom right of the painting is replaced by a huddled child.

This sketch does not focus as much on the contrast between light and shade as many of the other sketches in the album, but still the artist has used pen and ink hatch marks around the man on the left and the child on the right to indicate areas of shadow.
