Vatican Museums (Vatican City), Cast of column base and lowest part of column with scrolling decoration in low relief

Cast of column base and lowest part of column with scrolling decoration in low relief

From: Vatican Museums (Vatican City)

RA Collection: Art

The cast is of the lower portion of a column and its base which is now in the Vatican Museum. The complete column (H: 2.94 m) is recomposed of numerous fragments of which only a few are ancient. The base of the column, well-reproduced in the cast, is not ancient.

The Royal Academy has another cast of this same column, 12/2290; both casts were probably acquired from the collection of Thomas Lawrence. Interestingly, this cast was displayed for years upside down, with its base functioning as a capital.
