Landscape and portrait painter. Son of carver and gilder, picture and looking glass framemaker, printseller, picture cleaner, James Linnell (1759-1836).
Linnell entered the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1805 and about the same time became a pupil of John Varley. He was a friend of William Blake and his daughter married Samuel Palmer.
