Paid a passing visit to
John Linnell at Red Hill after spending two days at Hempstead, leaving with the
Bishop of St. Albans,
Sir Evelyn Wood,
Sir M. Ridley and their families; Linnell was well, showed his last landscape, but Richmond thinks he no longer paints; he did not have time to see the Palmers; the
Holbein is better than he hoped or expected, and the
Duke will lend other things [to the Academy exhibition]; the Duke says he has always associated Richmond with the head of
Newman; the castle is being restored and he talks of its history and his room.
