Summary Note
When Inwood and his father were commissioned to design a new church of St. Pancras in London, Inwood spent six months from 1818 to 1819 surveying and recording the Athenian Acropolis. The two vestries of the church, in particular, proclaim the influence of the two tribunes of the Erechtheum, with its celebrated caryatids, while other parts copy the Athenian Tower of the Winds. Drawings of the church were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819 and 1821.
The text is in the following books: 1-4. Cadmeia; 5-14. Homeros; 15-17. Herodotos; 18-24. Erechtheion.
Plates 1-16 show the Erechtheum: 1. western elevation; 2. plan; 3. restoration, viewed from north-west; 4, 5, 8/9-12, 14-16. architectural details. Plates 17-37 show architectural details of the Erechtheum, the Parthenon, the Temple of Victory and other Athenian temples. Plate 38 shows a plan and view of the Aegisthaena, Megara; plate 39, a Corinthian capital from near Actium.
