Summary Note

The plates show views of the rivers and the country bordering them, with boats, figures, castles, bridges and other buildings. They are one-tint lithographs. The work was also available coloured in a portfolio.

Stanfield was himself a former sailor, and in his time his marine subjects were admired as much as those of J.M.W. Turner.
