General Note
The second title-plate and dedication (which introduce the engravings after Le Brun) are bound in after plate [21], rather than after plate [22] (the last of the reproductions after Le Sueur). This is probably because pl.[22] shows an over-all view of the gallery.
Contents
[T.pl., engr. dedic.] - [Text, 'Description De L'Hostel Du Chastelet, Ci-Devant La Maison De M. Le President Lambert'] - [Plates] - [Divisional t.pl., 'La Galerie De Monsr. le President Lambert Representant L'Apotheose D'Hercule ... A Paris ... et a Amsterdam ...'] - [Engr. dedic.] - [Plates].
Responsibility Note
All plates in the first group [1-21] are signed as painted by Le Sueuer, and most as drawn by B. Picart; all are signed by their engravers, B. Picart, Beauvais, L. Desplaces, C. Dupuis, Duchange or Duflos. Of the second group only some are signed with the name of the painter (Le Brun) and the draughtsman (Picart); in most cases the name of the engraver is given - Mathys Poel, Picart, L. Surugue, L. Desplaces. The plates of the third group [37-42] carry simply the signature 'Mariette excud.'
Only plate [28] carries the publisher's imprint of Duchange.
On the first engraved dedication plate, the work is dedicated to the Marquis de Lambert by G. Duchange; on the second, to Nicolas Lambert by B. Picart.
Summary Note
The plates fall into three groups: plates [1-22], reproducing works by Le Sueur, plates [23-36], reproducing works by Le Brun, and plates [37-42], showing plans and elevations of the house. Some of the plates in the second group bear the earlier dates of 1713, 1714, 1718 and 1719. Between plates [21] and [22] appear a second engraved title plate (entitled 'La Galerie De Mons. le President Lambert', and carrying the imprint, 'A Paris chez du Change ... et a Amsterdam chez B. Picart') and a second engraved dedication.
The Hôtel Lambert was built for Jean-Baptiste Lambert by Louis Le Vau in 1641-2, and was decorated by E. Le Sueur; after Jean-Baptiste's death in 1644 further decoration was carried out for his brother, Nicolas Lambert, by Le Sueur and Le Brun. Le Sueur's decorations were painted for a bedroom, a bathroom, a cabinet d'Amour and a cabinet des Muses (all showing scenes from Greek mythology); Le Brun's for a gallery of Hercules, for which stucco decorations were provided by Van Opstal.
