Content Description
Copy letter in which Lamb replies to Kelly's, of 12 October 1938, on ways to make the Summer Exhibition more attractive to younger artists [RAA/SEC/10/41/6]. The view of the Council, in Lamb's opinion, was that the scheme of the Special Committee (1937) was inadvisable, as tending to open favouritism and a rather erratic choice of works, which might earn the disapproval of members. The President had thought it desirable for Kelly to explain his views more fully to Council, who were anxious to enlist the support of young artists, but were reluctant to sanction any unfairness in the selection of works. Lamb hopes that Kelly will attend Council on the 18th, if possible with some sort of definite plan.
