Whitaker tells Finlay how much he admired his portrait [by A. R. Middleton Todd] and thanks her for her help in finding the right artist. He goes on to say how much fun the sittings were, despite ill health and various mishaps: "I don't think I ever felt more sad over a pleasurable experience coming to an end. Mr M-T was so kind and considerate & so full of humour (when he at last lets you see it) that I had none of the tedium I was threatened with by my friends. He really is a most engaging personality . . ."
