A.RMT [A. R. Middleton Todd], to [J. G.] Pilcher [Royal Hospital for Incurables, West Hill, Putney S.W.15.]
c. 1947
Draft letter stating that it was a general rule among artists not to show a portrait until it was finished, so Middleton Todd could not accede to the request of Pilcher's committee to see the portrait of
Sir Edward Maclagan. Middleton Todd was thoroughly satisfied with the progress of the work, and at least nine sittings were normally required for a portrait of that sort. It was absurd for Sir Edward to express himself as being "shocked" at the result of the first sittings. Middleton Todd continues: "If a portrait could be produced as a conjuror produces a rabbit from a hat then painting would indeed be a quick way of making a fortune." Pilcher and his committee could rest assured that the portrait would not leave Middleton Todd's studio until he was satisfied with it, and when he was satisfied with it, it would be a first rate portrait, and would represent him at the RA exhibition the following year.
