Explore the latest work of this summer's artist-in-residence, Chris Huen Sin Kan, in his studio at the Royal Academy Schools.
Chris Huen Sin Kan (b. 1991, Hong Kong) joins us this summer for a month-long residency in the historic RA Schools after which he will present his work in an exclusive showcase. Visit The Weston Studio this summer and see how the RA Schools has influenced the artist’s practice and the works he’s created during this residency. The show will form part of an extended touring exhibition that Huen will present in Hong Kong and other cities in China at a later date.
In this residency, Huen seeks to explore his role as an artist making art within a different culture and society. Through exchange and discussion with students and professors, Huen will compare his own art study experience in Hong Kong with those currently studying here in London, transforming his RA Schools Studio with a new series of paintings and drawing in the process.
About the residency programme
This ongoing residency programme is co-presented by the RA and K11 Art Foundation, a non-profit organisation in Hong Kong dedicated to fostering the development of Chinese contemporary art. In this partnership, Chinese artists take up residency in London to highlight the diversity and dynamism of Chinese contemporary art, and RA Schools graduates take up residency at K11 sites in China, including the Wuhan K11 Art Village. The partnership aims to facilitate an exchange of artistic practices, and give participating artists opportunities to engage with new and international audiences. Chris Huen Sin Kan is the fifth artist-in-residence in the programme.

About the artist
Chris Huen Sin Kan is an artist whose practice, with an emphasis on painting, explores the minute and exquisite experiences of everyday life. He obtained a BA in Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013. He is particularly drawn to fanatical behaviours and trivial moments that carry immense vitality such as a small dog or an ordinary lawn. Huen’s large-scale oil paintings, a constellation of brush marks often starring a cast of recurring characters including his wife Haze, son Joel, daughter Tess and dogs Balltsz, MuiMui and Doodood, evolve organically and haphazardly. Recent solo exhibitions include Chris Huen: Blossoms in the Shade, Ota Fine Arts (Singapore, 2022). He currently lives and works in London.
