We're proud to present a diverse selection of paintings and prints from Leonard McComb's celebrated career (1930-2018).
“Everything I make is a portrait, whether I paint a human head, a flower, or an object on a table.”
Leonard McComb RA, 2004
Leonard McComb RA (1930–2018) always loved to work from life. Much of his subject matter was inspired by what he saw during his extensive travels, particularly in Cyprus and the South of France. His work was led and informed by the close relationships he forged over time, be they with friends made while abroad or among the market traders of Billingsgate, London.
This display celebrates a number of key paintings and works on paper from McComb’s long career. Including still lives, landscapes and two portraits (a self-portrait greets visitors as they enter the room) the artist’s visual language is characterised by the warmth, vibrant colour and energy that the artist infused into all of his subjects. McComb was a regular exhibitor in the Academy’s annual Summer Exhibition showing work every year including four paintings in 2018’s critically acclaimed show.
All works are available for sale and are on display in the Keeper's House in the Belle Shenkman Room. Members of the public can ask at the Friends desk for access to the exhibition.
