From Life
Join acclaimed physicist Professor Brian Cox OBE and celebrated portraitist Jonathan Yeo as they examine where science ends and art begins with the RA’s Artistic Director Tim Marlow.
Today’s emerging technologies present artists with new ways to both observe and represent themselves and the world around them. Our exhibition From Life offers a glimpse of possible future applications of virtual and augmented reality in art, but what draws artists to science and technology and how are they often crucial to wider innovations?
Biographies
Professor Brian Cox OBE obtained a first class honours degree in physics from the University of Manchester and a PhD in High Energy Particle Physics at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg. In 2009, Brian became Professor of Particle Physic. In 2015, he became The Royal Society’s Professor for Public Engagement in Science and in 2016 became a Fellow of the Royal Society. Brian has received numerous awards for his work in publicising science. Already a Fellow of the International Explorers Club, in 2006 he received the prestigious British Association Lord Kelvin award for his work in promoting science to the public. In October 2010, Brian visited Buckingham Palace to collect his OBE for his work in science. As well as influencing young people in the UK, his talks have inspired many audiences around the globe. His credits include numerous BBC productions such as Wonders of the Universe (2011), Human Universe (2014), and 21st Century Race for Space (2017).
British artist Jonathan Yeo (born 1970), lives and works in London and is internationally recognised for his portraiture. He is known for his depictions of iconic figures including Dennis Hopper, Nicole Kidman, Damien Hirst, Malala Yousafzai, Grayson Perry and Tony Blair, amongst others. Rising to prominence in the 2000s as a contemporary portraitist, Yeo became renowned for his paintings of important cultural and political figures. Widely celebrated for both traditional and experimental figurative art, he has explored more conceptual themes in his plastic surgery series and porn collages. Yeo is currently working with a number of technology companies on ways to incorporate the latest technology, including Virtual Reality and advanced 3D scanning, into the evolution of portraiture. His latest body of work includes paintings and sculpture and will be seen for the first time in From Life at the Royal Academy, an exhibition about the past, present and future of artists working from life, which runs from 11 December 2017 – 11 March 2018.
