Renowned Danish-Icelandic artist, Olafur Eliasson is joined by the RA’s Artistic Director Tim Marlow to discuss his extraordinary architectural projects and works in public spaces over the past 20 years.
Artist Olafur Eliasson’s diverse works – in sculpture, painting, photography, film, and installations – have been exhibited widely throughout the world. Not limited to the confines of the museum and gallery, his practice engages the broader public sphere through architectural projects and interventions in civic space. His art is driven by his interests in perception, movement, embodied experience, and feelings of self, as well as his desire to make the concerns of art relevant to society at large.
His projects have included The blind pavilion for the 50th Venice Biennale, The weather project at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, Green river carried out in various cities, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2007, The New York City Waterfalls and Ice Watch. Eliasson established Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin in 1995, which today encompasses some ninety craftsmen, specialised technicians, architects, archivists, administrators, programmers, art historians, and cooks. In 2014, Eliasson set up Studio Other Spaces, an office for art and architecture, with his long-time collaborator Sebastian Behmann.
This event coincides with the publication of Studio Olafur Eliasson: Unspoken Spaces, the first major book and monograph on his architectural projects and works in public spaces around the world. A book signing will follow this event, where copies of Unspoken Spaces (Thames & Hudson April 2016) will be available for purchase.
Pre-booking for Friends of the RA opens at 10am on Thursday 18 Feburary 2016.
Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10am on Monday 22 February 2016.
