Marina Abramović joins the RA’s Director of Exhibitions, Andrea Tarsia, to explore art, heartbreak and healing in her recent opera project, ‘7 Deaths of Maria Callas’.
Over the past 50 years, Marina Abramović has earned worldwide acclaim as a pioneer of performance art. Abramović has consistently tested the limits of her own physical and mental endurance in her work – and invited audiences to encounter it with her.
In her recent multi-media opera production, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas (2020), she pays homage to the iconic opera singer, re-enacting Callas’ on-stage deaths in seven classic operas. Once again challenging herself emotionally, physically and creatively, Abramović considers love and heartbreak alongside the importance of healing and the potential for immortality through art.
In this event, Abramović talks about her creative process, collaborations and personal connection to 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, as well as looking beyond the past and present to future projects and the importance of bringing back the human touch in art and life.
Marina Abramović is a world-renowned performance artist. She was one of the first performance artists to become formally accepted by the institutional museum world with major solo shows taking place throughout Europe and the US. She is the founder of the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), a platform for immaterial and durational art.
