Giovanni Battista Moroni
On Sunday afternoons in January, visitors to our 'Moroni' exhibition will have the chance to have their portrait sketched outside the galleries.
At our recent Renaissance Christmas evening in honour of Giovanni Battista Moroni, we brought the techniques of portraiture to life by inviting artists Lilias Buchanan and Claire Price, both alumni of the Royal Drawing School, to set up a drawing studio outside the exhibition. Visitors volunteered to sit for quick 15-minute portraits, some of which are shown here.
While styles have moved on since Moroni’s day, there’s no doubt that portraiture still has an important place in art, and it makes up a significant part of both Lilias’ and Claire’s artistic practice. They each have a distinctive way of capturing the likeness of their sitters and using colour to accentuate features and clothing.
As the exhibition enters its final weeks, visitors who missed out on having their portrait drawn will get another chance throughout January. Visit the exhibition on Sundays between 2 and 5pm to step into our artists’ studio beside the magnificent Taddei Tondo – the only marble sculpture by Michelangelo in the UK. You can pose for a portrait or simply watch Claire and Lilias at work as they talk you through their techniques.
Finished sketches can be purchased by arrangement with the artists.
