Introduction to David Hockney RA: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life
Free talk
Monday 4 July 2016 1 - 2pm
The Reynolds Room, Burlington House, Royal Academy of Arts
Free, booking required.
Curator Edith Devaney introduces David Hockney’s portrait exhibition, giving an insight into this remarkable series of work and Hockney’s relationship with portraiture as well as her experiences of being one of Hockney’s subjects.
Hockney’s concern with portraiture can be traced back to his student days and is a genre he has revisited frequently throughout his career. Often working in distinct and defined series, he has employed various media in his exploration of the form, including the use of the camera lucida which followed his long study of the past use of this artistic device, and drawing on an ongoing interest in photography.
In this talk, exhibition curator Edith Devaney examines the development of his portraiture over the last six decades and discusses the extent to which this exhibition challenges our perceptions of portraiture just as Hockney also challenged our perception of landscape four years ago in his A Bigger Picture landscape exhibition, also curated by Devaney.
Doors open at 12.30pm. Unclaimed seats will be released to those waiting for returns at 12.55pm. No admittance will be granted after 1pm.
Free, booking required.
