By special arrangement, Friends are invited to tour the Travellers Club; the oldest surviving Pall Mall club, established in 1819.
In 1826, the members of the Travellers Club decided to move from the club’s original premises at 12 Waterloo Place and spent £25,000 on the construction of a new clubhouse on the present site at 106 Pall Mall. The club’s architect Sir Charles Barry took inspiration from Raphael’s Palazzo Pandolfini in Florence, which is evident in the Pall Mall elevation. He later went on to design the Houses of Parliament.
The club houses an interesting selection of paintings; several by Royal Academicians, including works by Angelica Kaufmann, Thomas Lawrence and George Romney. Friends privately tour the principal rooms, which retain many original features, and finish with a special visit to the library where the club’s librarian will discuss highlights from the collection, rich with literature from members’ travels on the Grand Tour.
This event is also taking place on 17 February.
£30. Includes coffee/tea on arrival. Smart dress code applies.
