Join Friends of the RA on this visit to two of the quirkiest museums of University College London: the Grant Museum of Zoology and the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology.
Friends will have the opportunity to handle objects and learn about the collections, as well as understanding both museums’ links to UCL's world-renowned Slade School of Fine Art.
The Grant and the Petrie museums have strong ties with the Slade School – artist alumni from the art school accompanied museum founder William Petrie's digs in Egypt, which forms the majority of the Petrie's collection. The Grant Museum works with final year Slade students, who create artworks inspired by the museum's collections which are on display in the museum during the summer months.
Friends enjoy curator's talks at both museums, and have the opportunity to handle some of the museums' most interesting and unusual objects. At the Grant Museum, Kieren Reed from the Slade will discuss the process of creating student interventions in the Grant Museum's spaces. The Petrie museum’s curator also leads a behind-the-scenes tour, looking at pharaonic art and Roman portraiture.
This is part of a series of events exploring UCL as a cultural venue.
This event will also be held on 30 January.
