Join Friends of the RA for a private lecture on the National Gallery’s blockbuster exhibition, ‘Michelangelo & Sebastiano’, followed by timed entry to the exhibition.
This blockbuster exhibition focuses on the creative relationship between two giants of the Italian High Renaissance: Sebastiano del Piombo and Michelangelo.
Sebastiano del Piombo trained under Bellini and Giorgione and moved to Rome in 1511, where he encountered Michelangelo – a meeting that would give rise to both friendship and artistic collaboration. Michelangelo provided his younger colleague with drawings and ideas, resulting in two major collaborative altarpieces: the Pietà for San Francesco in Viterbo and The Raising of Lazarus (above) for Narbonne cathedral, where Sebastiano was pitted in direct competition against Michelangelo’s rival, Raphael.
Our private lecture, given by art historian and Italian Renaissance specialist Siân Walters, will offer a fascinating introduction to Michelangelo & Sebastiano. The trip includes an afternoon timed-entry to the exhibition and a complimentary audio guide. Coffee, tea and homemade biscuits will be available from 10.40am; the lecture will begin promptly at 11am.
