Emyr Williams: Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko
'Abstract Expressionism' in-gallery talk

Meet in Gallery I, Main Galleries
Free with exhibition ticket. No booking required.
In this in-gallery talk, artist Emyr Williams discusses paintings by Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko in front of the works themselves.
Artist Emyr Williams examines two early works from leading figures of Abstract Expressionism: Pollock’s Male and Female (1942–43) and Rothko’s Gethsemane (1944). Although the work of these two artists is generally seen as very visually different, both these early paintings by Pollock and Rothko show a connection in their approach. Looking at the thematic and technical approaches of Pollock and Rothko as seen in these two notable works, Williams explores how American post-war artists sought to loosen the shackles of modern European painting and forge a new art.
Emyr Williams is an award winning abstract painter who has exhibited in the UK, Europe and North America. He has taught and lectured in schools, colleges and universities in the UK, France and the USA, and is currently working on a new book, Abstraction and Abstract Painting.
