Considered by many to be the most magnificent of our medieval cathedrals, Ely was founded as an abbey by St Etheldreda in 673 CE and established as a cathedral in 1109.
The present building dates from 1081 and is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. Our tour includes the 14th century Lady Chapel, Norman stonework, sculptures, memorials and the Octagon, described by Simon Jenkins as ‘unreservedly his favourite feature of medieval architecture’. We also visit the Stained Glass Museum.
Includes coach, lunch, gls wine, tea.
