Dame Ethel Walker ARA, The Jade Necklace

The Jade Necklace, ?1930s

Dame Ethel Walker ARA (1861 - 1951)

RA Collection: Art

A prolific portraitist, Ethel Walker preferred female subjects to male ones. Among her sitters were Vanessa Bell, Barbara Hepworth, Nicholette Devas, Orovida Pissarro and Nancy Astor. She also painted "portraits" of female models and friends, which she gave generalised titles such as 'The Necklace' and 'The Leghorn Hat'. Paintings like 'The Jade Necklace' were intended to be pictorial "poems" of female beauty rather than records of physical likeness.
