Sir George Clausen RA, Study of trees and farm in a landscape (Barnard's Farm, Duton Hill)

Study of trees and farm in a landscape (Barnard's Farm, Duton Hill), probably 1920s/30s

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

The scene depicted here has been identified as the lane below Barnard's Farm at Duton Hill in Essex as siimilar views can be seen in two finished oil paintings, The Road, Winter Morning (exh. R.A., 1923, no. 451; Tate Britain) and Barnard's Farm, Autumn Morning (exh. R.A., 1930, no. 498; location unknown). The positions of the trees and buildings in RA 05/662 correspond almost exactly with those in the latter work.

The lane seen in the foreground of both paintings features in other related studies (see RA 05/1727 and RA 06/32). Clausen lived at 'Hillside', Duton Hill, Essex from 1917 to around 1931 (see record for RA 06/32 for further details).
