A pen and ink drawing of Archimandrite Nicholas and three studies of hands. The sitter is probably Nicholas Gibbes (1876-1963), also known as Nikolai and born Charles Sydney Gibbes. He was born in Rotherham and studied at Cambridge University before becoming tutor to Tsar Nicholas II's children from 1908-1917. After the family were killed he fled to China and later returned to England, becaming a priest in the Russian Orthodox church in 1934.
